El Rumbon Cubano – Rumba Party | 14th March

Feb 8th, 2010 | By | Category: Clubs

El Rumbon Cubano in March, go back to their roots with a rumba special. Cubacheche launched this unique Cuban event nearly two years ago, with an amazing performance by one of the few bands in London playing authentic Cuban Rumba. Over the months we’ve had many requests to bring back the rumba, so… Dilanga will be doing just that on March 14th – accompanied by five talented and exciting Rumba dancers: Ariel Rios Robert, Ileana Cachon, Hannah Bates, Melissa Blanco and Jose Ramon.

El Rumbon Cubano is a family friendly event with a unique ambience unlike any other musical event in London. It has a warm Caribbean feel, which will appeal to both Cubans and non-Cubans alike. Over the months it has built up a steady band of devotees, some of whom bring their children along to enjoy the culture, wonderful music, dazzling performances and thrilling atmosphere. The restaurant Costa Dorada in Hanway St. off Tottenham Court Road serves delicious Spanish food as well as special Cuban plates and children’s portions for a very reasonable cost.

There will also be a dance class with award winning dancer and star of BBC1′s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE – Yanet Fuentes, together with Ariel Rios Robert.

7.30 – 8.30 pm Rumba (all levels)

Javier – voted the best Cuban DJ in the UK plays a hot mix of the latest sounds from Cuba – including salsa, timba & reggaeton – all guaranteed to keep the crowd dancing until the early hours!

THE BAND – DILANGA
Dilanga is made up of musicians who spearhead London’s Latin and Afro-Cuban music scene. The group employ drumming traditions that are more than two hundred years old, giving us many of the rhythmic structures and concepts of much of today’s popular music.

The word ‘dilanga’ in Cuban Ki-congo means ‘times past’. The choice of name reflects the Afro-Cuban traditions from which the group draws knowledge and inspiration. Rumba is an inclusive ‘happening’ of drumming, singing and dancing, a collective event with an element of chance. No two Rumbas are alike – the line up will vary, the journey will always be a new one.

Rumba has a playful, undulating energy, and with the right alchemy, the sparks will fly – it’s something everyone feels.

True to the essence of rumba, Dilanga’s style comes from injecting elements of diverse musical backgrounds into the traditional form. The band’s performance contains an energy and exuberance, which is both visually and musically playful.
