Directly from Havana, known to Cubans as “EL TREN de la SALSA” and to the rest of the world as the “The Rolling Stones of Cuba” …the incomparable Latin Grammy winners Los Van Van return to London after one year absence.

The greatest Cuban dance band in the world today, Los Van Van, land back in London on Thursday 1st March 2012. 
With a career spanning 43 years, no wonder they are nicknamed “the Rolling Stones of Cuban music” Still led by original founder member and bassist Juan Formell, since 1969 they have produced some of the most influential Latin music of all time, often introducing new rhythms and styles that have set dance floors on fire across the world! 

Having won a Latin Grammy award for the album “Van Van is Here” (Llegó Van Van) in 2000, Los Van Van are no strangers to playing crowds in their tens of thousands, especially across Latin America where they headline stadiums! 

Los Van Van will arrive with new vocalist Mandy Cantero to replace Mayito Rivera, who left the band in September to focus on his solo career. Armando “Mandy” Cantero is one of the shinning stars that have been part of ensembles such as Pupy y los que Son Son or Charanga Forever. Mandy began to stand out by himself, and started to take his rightful place amongst the already well-established Cuban singers.

An authentic Cuban night where you can dance the night away to top DJs playing the cream of Cuban salsa, timba, son & reggaeton and listen to some of the best of Cuba’s UK based musicians playing live.

Now in its fourth year the party this month includes live music from Jesús Cutiño & Son de Cuba, on stage from 10pm.

This energetic singer/musician always lights up the stage with his performances and together with the rest of this highly talented band – they’ll be helping kickstart a brand new era for this long-running night.

DJ Javier will be on the decks playing an assortment of the best Cuban music including salsa, timba, and reggaeton.

The Rumbon always features a dance class and this month the Team from the Havana Londres dance school will be teaching a fun Rueda (Cuban Wheel) dance class for Intermediate /Advanced Levels.

On the eve of his 70th birthday, legendary pianist and ambassador of Cuban music and culture Chucho Valdés comes to London with his Afro-Cuban Messengers group for a trio of exclusive performances at two of the city’s finest venues.

The multi-Grammy and Latin Grammy Award winning artist has long been considered one of Cuba’s greatest exports, a brilliant pianist and bandleader whose contributions to the world of music have enriched and enlightened the international scene for years. As well as an illustrious solo career culminating in Chucho’s Steps album, which won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album, he was a founding member of the seminal Latin-jazz group Irakere, who “put Cuban jazz on the world map long before the Buena Vistas” (The Guardian).

Born in 1941 the pianist, composer, professor of music and musical arranger began playing the piano at the age of 3 guided by his father the great, ‘Bebo Valdés’. The pianist, composer, professor of music and musical arranger has had worldwide recognition for his phenomenal contribution to the world of music

Now approaching his 70th year (on the 9th October), Valdés is set to play three small club dates at Boisdale of Canary Wharf and at Floridita in Soho – both venues will serve as perfect settings to enjoy Chucho’s music in an exclusive, intimate atmosphere.

Wherever you’re from, their blend of soul, son, jazz, timba, rock & reggae will hook you in. Their repertoire includes authentic and original compositions as well as popular songs from bands such as Buena Vista Social Club.

Band members include Rene Alvarez – Director, Composer, Pianist & Vocalist, Randy Lester Hechevarria – Percussion, Michel Castellanos – Percussion, Kris Kedzior – Bass Player, and the charismatic Yuri Moreno – Vocals.

Salsa is a great way for children to have fun through movement and exercise, developing a sense of rhythm and improving self -esteem and confidence.

With our professional salsa teachers, we can cater for children with little or no experience to those with familiarity of salsa or other dance forms, working towards performing.

London-Salsa Youth School is a part-funded/part voluntary social enterprise. We currently run two Youth School projects.
