Sadly last night in Brixton, London fans did not get a chance to be likewise moved by his total brilliance. It was a short but sweet a bit less than hour and a half concert and disappointed fans like myself may have been waiting for more. There were two especially bright moments of the night – we all sang to ‘Pasaporte (no doubt due to the weather!) and at the end, when the band did an all too brief encore with ‘Mi Música’.

The acoustics of the Electric Brixton are not known for being “gooood!” which may have also disappointed expectant fans. Having said that, the place was packed with appreciative people dancing to the voice, lyrics & sounds of Havana D’Primera.

Come again, Maestro Abreu please, and play your trumpet, next time!

Brighton city holds its first Cuban Salsa Congress from June 21 to 24th offering over 60 hours of workshops and three massive late-night parties. The event will be held in the 4 star Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel.

Valdes lived in Sweden for many years.

Bebo Valdes’ early life and career

Bebo valdes was born Ramón Emilio Valdés Amaro on Oct. 9, 1918 in Quivican, a town about an hour from Havana. His passion for music and the piano started to develop in 1925 when he was 7-years-old.

He studied European and Cuban classical music at the Municipal Conservatory in Havana and according to NPR, after his lessons he took to the streets and played his music, an African-influenced rumba.

In the early years of his career he started his first band, Orchestra Valdes-Hernandez, and played piano in Havana clubs in Cuba’s golden age. He was the leader in two Cuban big bands and was a “house” arranger for the popular Tropicana Club.

He solidified his skills as an arranger and composer and in the 1940s when he joined Julio Cueva’s orchestra and wrote one of his first mambo songs, breaking a trend in popular music on the small island.

He left Cuba for Mexico in 1960, during the revolution, with singer Rolando La Serie. He had five children with his first wife Pilar Valdes. Bebo Valdes reignited his career later in life with his son Chucho Valdes, also an acclaimed pianist, from his first marriage.He remarried in 1963, staring a new life in Stockholm.

He played throughout Europe and the United States, sharing the sounds of Latin jazz. He released “Bebo Rides Again” in 1994.

In a 2006 interview with NPR, Bebo Valdes said:

“If you are a musician, and you do one thing, you should enjoy what you do… This is my profession and it is my hobby. And I live in love with what I do. In those years in Stockholm, even if I wasn’t successful, I did it because I liked it. And I would keep doing it until I die.”

Cuba’s greatest pianist returns to graces the stage once more at Ronnie Scotts, performing 3 nights with a quintet of musicians from Havana (including his sister Mayra Caridad Valdés in the vocals), focusing on new and recent repertoire.

Chucho Valdés currently tours the world with a quintet of musicians from Havana (including his sister Mayra Caridad Valdés), focusing on new repertoire as well as works documented on Live At The Village Vanguard (2000) and previous releases Briyumba Palo Congo (1999), and Bele Bele en La Habana (1998). He is also busy year-round as the president (since 1992) of the Havana Jazz Festival. Chucho Valdés Short Biography

“Chucho started his first jazz trio at the age of 16 and founded Irakere in 1972 while playing with the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna. An incredibly inventive and fluid pianist, Chucho combines the influences of musicians such as Art Tatum, Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner with Afro-Cuban roots and a blazing technique that leaves one breathless and amazed. He writes most of the band’s compositions and arrangements and has released dozens of albums, both with Irakere and as a solo performer.

Chucho is revered as a national treasure in Cuba, the Duke Ellington of his country. He receives the admiration and thanks of his people in a way that the Duke never did in his lifetime. When you hear current Cuban jazz or popular music, whether Gonzalo Rubalcaba, N.G. La Banda or Charanga Habanera, you hear the influence of Chucho Valdés and Irakere.” Afrocubaweb.com

The wait is finally over! One of the most widely celebrated trumpet players, Alexander Abreu, and his Grammy-nominated band, Havana D’Primera, will make their live debut at Electric Brixton on Friday, April 12th.

Havana D’Primera, led by trumpet player, songwriter and singer Alexander Abreu have created the soundtrack to Cuban life over the last five years. Abreu is often compared to legends such as Louis Armstrong. Four years ago, he pulled together an ensemble of seasoned musicians– who played alongside some of the best bands of the golden age of contemporary Cuban salsa and timba –to form Havana D’Primera. Concerned with the decline of Afro-Cuban dance music on its home turf, Abreu decided to pick up the standard once carried around the globe by the very bands he had played with, such as Isaac Delgado and Paulito FG y Su Elite. Havana D’Primera is now considered today’s top contemporary Cuban band. 




Their first album Hacienda Historia quickly made Alexander Abreu y Havana D’Primera a favorite among Timba fans and gained crossover success in the Salsa world. It seems awaiting fans of their music have been taunted and teased with a few songs released as singles and added to compilation albums over the past year and a half of what their last album was going to be. Their latest album Pasaporte (finally out) is currently a huge international hit worldwide. 

Timbageek had the pleasure to meet this amazing band last July in Paris.
We all loved the voice & lyrics of Alexander Abreu, as he is probably the best trumpet player in Cuba. The sound of his trumpet during a solo (Paris) was such, that the ear could almost hear the words of the song he was playing.

ISMARAY CHACON (ASPRINA) “CUBA”
Ismaray Chacón ‘Aspirina’ is a member of the famous ASPIRINA family with its origin in Guanabacoa, La Habana (Cuba). She is the granddaughter of the great master Luis Chacón ‘Aspirina’ … Rumbero Mayor! She started her professional career with the group ‘Obini Bata’ as a dancer, singer and percussionist of the Afro-Cuban culture. In 2008 she went to Singapore for a year, where she worked as percussionist in a group of Cuban Timba. Coming back to Cuba she became a member of the ‘Coro Folklórico Nacional’ and of ‘Rumberos de Cuba’ and demonstrated her knowledge in different folk groups of the first level. She is a dance and percussion teacher of the Afro-Cuban and popular Cuban culture.
Currently she lives in Europe (Switzerland) where she presents shows and teaches her family’s culture, tradition and knowledge. Charisma, knowledge, creativity and energy characterize Ismaray Chacón ‘Aspirina’.
