There will not be a main Carnival de Cuba event in 2009 – The organizers have decided to cancel this year event as the recession in biting UK.
In an official statement Carnival de Cuba said “The reasons for skipping this year are that Southwark Council wanted to charge for the use of Southwark Park – this makes the event uneconomic, especially as entry is free, we run free activities for kids and workshops with local schools. Carnival de Cuba receives no grants or support from the council, unlike many other events, and having to pay for the site on top of all others costs unfortunately makes the event unviable”
We had hoped to join this year with Carnaval del Pueblo and share a site with them, but in the end they were unable to agree to this
In addition, one of our long standing sponsors unfortunately went into liquidation, so after a great deal of consideration, we decided to take a break this year and look for a new venue for 2010 when we will be back!”
However, Carnival de Cuba will be holding a mini Carnival de Cuba event as part of the Waterloo Carnival on Friday, July 10th outside Cubana – www.cubana.co.uk – there will be bands from midday until around 9.00am and Cuban food and drink stalls. Please note that this will not be equivalent to the main Carnival de Cuba event. There will also be a Carnival de Cuba evening event on June 27th organised by Candela – please check back for full details of both these events in May.
The organizers are planning to be back next year 2010 and put on an event that we will really appreciate like all these years.
